HBO Halts The Last of Us Season 3 Production in Vancouver Through Late June
The Last of Us Season 3 production has been suspended by HBO for a four-week period starting June 1.

HBO has paused production on The Last of Us Season 3 from June 1 through June 28, according to filings with the British Columbia production directory. The suspension affects filming in Vancouver, where 13 World Cup matches will take place between June 11 and July 19. The production, operating under the working title Calm Current, began work on March 2 and is scheduled to conclude on November 27.

Production Details and Schedule Impact
The four-week hiatus represents a significant interruption to the series' filming calendar. With approximately 179 days allocated for production before the halt, the suspension creates a notable gap in the shooting schedule. Officials have not disclosed the specific reason for the pause, though the timing directly aligns with the World Cup tournament's Canadian leg, which will host matches in both Toronto and Vancouver—the latter being the primary filming location for the HBO adaptation.
Season 3 Creative Direction and Cast Changes
Season 3 marks a substantial shift in narrative focus. The new season will center on Kaitlyn Dever's character Abby, moving away from previous protagonist dynamics. The storyline will follow Abby's three-day journey to Seattle, explore her father's death, chronicle her revenge arc against Joel, and depict the eventual clash with both Joel and Ellie that was teased in the Season 2 finale. Supporting cast includes Kyriana Kratter as Lev, a transgender teenage member of the Seraphites faction, and Michelle Mao as Yara, Lev's sister.
Neil Druckmann, who co-created the series alongside Craig Mazin, has officially departed from the show. Craig Mazin will serve as sole showrunner for Season 3, which HBO and Max Content chairman Casey Bloys indicated is likely to be the franchise's final television season. Mazin has also been developing an adaptation of Baldur's Gate for television.
Reception and Audience Response
The series has experienced a sharp divergence between critical and audience reception. Season 1 achieved a 96% Rotten Tomatoes rating from critics, while Season 2 maintained 92% from reviewers but plummeted to 37% from audiences across over 5,000 reviews. Viewers cited Season 2 as a significant decline in quality compared to the premiere season.
