Honda is recalling more than 880,000 SUVs and pickup trucks across the United States because corrosion of the rear subframe—a critical structural component—can lead to suspension failure and potential loss of vehicle control. The recall affects certain model years of the Honda Pilot, Ridgeline, and Passport, along with the Acura MDX, and covers vehicles sold primarily in northern and rust-belt states where winter road salt accelerates metal deterioration.

Which Vehicles Are Affected

The recall covers 880,514 vehicles from the following model lines: 2016-2022 Honda Pilot, 2017-2023 Honda Ridgeline, 2019-2023 Honda Passport, and 2014-2020 Acura MDX. The affected vehicles were sold in Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Washington, D.C. Although the recall is expansive, Honda estimates that only approximately one percent of the listed vehicles actually exhibit the defect.

The Corrosion Problem

In regions where road salt is commonly applied during winter months, the rear subframe gradually corrodes at the suspension mounting points. As corrosion progresses, material thinning and driving vibrations can cause the mounting area to fracture and fail. Drivers may notice abnormal noises or vibration from the rear suspension, along with changes in handling characteristics while driving. To date, Honda has not received any warranty claims or reports of injuries or deaths related to the issue.

Remedy and Next Steps

Honda and Acura dealers will conduct a free inspection of the rear subframe and install a reinforcement kit if necessary, or repair or replace rear subframe components at no cost to vehicle owners. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed beginning July 7. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration campaign number is 26V367000. Vehicle Identification Numbers applicable to the recall will be searchable on NHTSA.gov starting June 10. Owners can contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138 for more information.

How do I know if my Honda is part of this recall?+
Check your vehicle's model year and model name against the affected list. You can also search your Vehicle Identification Number on NHTSA.gov starting June 10, or contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138.
Will I have to pay for the inspection or repair?+
No. Honda dealers will perform the inspection and any necessary repairs or component replacement at no cost to vehicle owners.
What happens if the rear subframe fails while I'm driving?+
A failed rear subframe can cause loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash. Drivers may first notice abnormal noises, vibration, or changes in handling. If you experience these symptoms, stop driving and contact a Honda dealer immediately.
Why does this problem mainly affect vehicles in certain states?+
The recall primarily covers states in the northern U.S. and rust-belt regions where road salt is used extensively during winter. Salt accelerates metal corrosion, making the rear subframe vulnerable to thinning and fracturing.
Has anyone been injured because of this defect?+
As of May 28, Honda reported no injuries, deaths, or warranty claims related to this rear subframe issue in the United States.
