Hugh Laurie has joined the cast of Legacy of Spies as Control, the commanding head of the intelligence agency known as The Circus.

Hugh Laurie has joined the cast of the forthcoming espionage series Legacy of Spies as Control, the commanding head of The Circus intelligence agency. The eight-part thriller, produced by BBC and MGM+ in partnership with The Ink Factory, expands its ensemble with several notable actors including Joe Alwyn as MI6 field operative Jim Prideaux. The production brings John le Carré's canonical spy fiction to the screen, drawing on material from his 1965 novel The Spy Who Came in from the Cold and his 2017 work A Legacy of Spies.

The Cast Takes Shape
Laurie, known for his roles in The Night Manager and the medical drama House, portrays Control as a politically shrewd yet morally complex superior to the agency's operatives. His character commands The Circus with fiendish authority, though his judgment often wavers between self-interest and institutional necessity. Alwyn, acclaimed for performances in The Brutalist and The Favourite, plays Prideaux as a charismatic veteran whose off-the-books field operations create friction within London headquarters.
The series reunites Matthew Macfadyen and Charlie Hunnam in central roles. Macfadyen returns to the iconic character of George Smiley, the thoughtful spymaster, while Hunnam takes on Alec Leamas, an embattled field operative worn down by decades of covert work. Additional cast members include Anjana Vasan as Connie Sachs, the Circus's Moscow intelligence specialist, and Charlotte Ritchie as Ann Smiley, George's emotionally complex wife. The supporting ensemble also features James McArdle, John Dagleish, Goran Bogdan, and Adam Hugill, among others.
Production and Direction
Stephen Cornwell, son of author John le Carré, serves as showrunner and writer alongside Clarissa Ingram. The creative partnership reflects a family-led production, with Stephen's brothers Simon and Nick overseeing executive production on behalf of the le Carré estate. Michael Lennox directs the series as lead director and executive producer, joined by Claudia Llosa as second director. Llosa, an Academy Award nominee and Golden Bear winner at the Berlin Film Festival, brings cinematic sensibility to the project.
