Hull Funeral Director Faces Sentencing After Bodies Found Decomposing at Cremation Facility

A funeral director in Hull has pleaded guilty to 67 offences after operating a cremation service that left bodies decomposing on premises while families unknowingly received strangers' ashes. Robert Bush, owner of Legacy Independent Funeral Directors, operated the fraudulent scheme for approximately 14 years before authorities discovered dozens of uncremated remains during a March 2024 police search.

The Deception Unravels

Bush, 48, appeared at Hull Crown Court for sentencing, where family members delivered impact statements describing the psychological devastation caused by his actions. When Jayne Rimmington collected what she believed were her mother Shirley Wright's ashes in October 2023, Bush handed over a box while her 86-year-old mother's body remained on the funeral home premises. Wright's remains were not recovered until five months after her death.

Another victim, Vicky Mitchell, received her father Colin Wainman's ashes in a navy blue box placed inside a Hobbycraft bag—a retail shopping carrier—with Bush apologizing for lacking proper gift packaging. The 69-year-old man's body had been stored uncremated for 198 days before Mitchell collected what she thought were his remains in March 2024.

Scale of the Operation

When police executed a search warrant at the Legacy funeral home in March 2024, officers discovered numerous bodies left uncovered and in various states of decomposition, stored on racks lining both sides of a room. One naked body remained on a stretcher on the floor. Personal items intended for the deceased—flowers, rings, teddy bears, and condolence cards—had been swept beneath the flooring. The removal operation required two days and multiple officers, including a disaster identification team.

Prosecutor Chris Paxton described Bush as having "breached that trust on an almost industrial scale in a myriad of ways," noting that he operated within the community for 14 years, entrusted by hundreds of bereaved families during their most vulnerable moments. Bush pleaded guilty to 30 counts of preventing lawful and decent burial alongside other offences related to the fraudulent cremation scheme.
