Hull Funeral Director Sentenced for Systematic Deception of Bereaved Families

A funeral director in Hull has faced court proceedings after defrauding bereaved families on what prosecutors described as an "almost industrial scale," with loved ones' bodies left uncremated and stored in decomposed states. Robert Bush, 48, owner of Legacy Independent Funeral Directors, pleaded guilty to 67 criminal offences during a five-day sentencing hearing at Hull Crown Court, including 30 counts of preventing lawful and decent burial.

The Scale of Deception

Families who trusted Bush with their most vulnerable moments discovered he had systematically handed them cremated remains belonging to other deceased relatives, while their own loved ones remained uncremated on his premises. In one case, Jayne Rimmington collected what she believed were the ashes of her 86-year-old mother, Shirley Wright, in October 2023. Bush attributed the unexpected weight of the remains to her mother's "bone density." Wright's body was recovered five months after her death, still uncremated and decomposing on the Legacy premises.

Another family member, Vicky Mitchell, received her father Colin Wainman's ashes in a navy blue box placed inside a Hobbycraft bag. Bush apologised at the time for lacking appropriate gift packaging. The 69-year-old's body lay uncremated for 198 days before being recovered on 8 March 2024. Mitchell described Bush as "a charlatan" and "a gravedigger from the 1800s" who "didn't care" about his responsibilities to grieving families.

Discovery and Investigation

When Humberside Police conducted a search of the Legacy premises in March 2024, officers encountered conditions described as horrific. Multiple bodies lay uncovered on racks in varying stages of decomposition, with one naked body remaining on a stretcher on the floor. Items intended as final tributes—flowers, rings, teddy bears, and handwritten cards with messages—had been swept beneath the floor. The removal operation required two days and multiple officers, including a specialist disaster identification team.

Prosecutor Chris Paxton KC told the court that Bush "operated within the heart of the community for around 14 years, entrusted by hundreds of bereaved families in their time of need." Yet he "breached that trust on an almost industrial scale in a myriad of ways." Family members read victim impact statements describing lasting psychological trauma, with several breaking down in tears during the proceedings. Bush told reporters entering the courtroom that he was sorry to those affected.
