International rescue teams extract first survivor from flooded Laos cave after week-long ordeal
One man has been successfully extracted from a flooded cave in Laos where prospectors became trapped after flash floods.

One of eight men trapped inside a flooded cave system in central Laos has been brought to safety, marking the first successful extraction in an ongoing multinational rescue operation. Four additional survivors remain stranded approximately 300 meters from the cave entrance, while two others remain unaccounted for. The group entered the remote mountain cave in Xaysomboun province to search for gold before heavy rainfall triggered flash flooding that blocked the main passage.
The Rescue Operation
The first survivor was extracted late on Friday after spending more than a week underground. Video footage showed the rescued man, caked in mud, being guided to safety and wrapped in an emergency blanket. Rescue officials from Thailand's Metta Tham and Saithan Saphanboon Foundation organizations confirmed the successful extraction on social media, describing it as the initial breakthrough in a challenging recovery mission.
The four remaining survivors were discovered huddled together on a rocky ledge on Wednesday by international diving teams. All show signs of severe hardship—rescue workers reported that the trapped men are suffering from chest pains, hunger, and exhaustion. The conditions inside the cave system are extremely hazardous, described by team members as being equivalent to "essentially diving in coffee" due to the murky water conditions and near-zero visibility.
International Response and Challenges
Specialized cave divers from Thailand, Indonesia, France, and Australia arrived on Friday to strengthen the rescue effort. Among them is Australian diver Josh Richards, who leads a cave exploration team and brings expertise in navigating narrow, flooded passages. This operation mirrors the 2018 rescue of a Thai youth football team trapped in a cave for 18 days, with some of the same international personnel involved in both efforts.
The search for the two missing men presents additional difficulties. Rescue teams will need to navigate a 30-meter narrow tunnel system while checking for intersections where the men might be sheltering. Forecasted thunderstorms and rainfall in 60 percent of the region add urgency to extraction efforts. How the first survivor was removed from the cave has not yet been disclosed, though officials indicate they will provide details as the operation continues.
The trapped group initially faced two proposed rescue strategies: pumping out floodwaters or teaching the non-divers among them to scuba dive and swim out. The successful extraction of the first man suggests alternative methods have been employed, though officials remain cautious about the next phases of the operation.
