Investigation into Mississippi College Football Player's Death Raises Questions About Autopsy Results

An 18-year-old college football wide receiver from Mississippi died after attending a July Fourth boat party at Horn Island, a barrier island with no facilities or communications. Two separate autopsy investigations are underway, with toxicology results pending from the state medical examiner's office. What Happened on Horn Island

Nolan Wells, a student and wide receiver at Southwest Mississippi Community College, disappeared during an all-day gathering at Horn Island, located off the coast of Ocean Springs. Wells went to the island on July Fourth with a group of friends who had organized what was described as a final celebration before returning to school or work after the holiday break. Approximately 300 people attended the event across multiple boats. When authorities retrieved his body on July 6, no obvious signs of trauma or foul play were immediately apparent, though the coroner's office noted that Horn Island's waters are known for dangerous currents and have produced numerous drowning victims in recent years.

Conflicting Accounts and Video Evidence

A viral video from the gathering sparked speculation and debate about the events preceding Wells' death. Attorney Ben Crump, representing Wells' family, initially suggested the video showed Wells demanding his phone back during an altercation. However, Tracestin Shepherd, a high school friend present at the gathering, contradicted this account in a broadcast statement to ABC News. Shepherd identified himself as the person heard yelling in the video and stated the confrontation involved him and a stranger over an unrelated fight, not Wells. Shepherd explained that Wells, who had met someone at the event, chose to remain behind when Shepherd's group returned to shore due to an electrical issue with their boat, planning to rejoin them on another vessel.

Investigation and Autopsy Status

Two concurrent autopsy investigations are examining Wells' death. The Mississippi State Medical Examiner's Office conducted an official autopsy on July 7 and is awaiting toxicology test results, which typically require several weeks to complete. Wells' parents also arranged for an independent autopsy to be conducted out of state in Washington, D.C., according to family attorney Ben Crump. The Jackson County Sheriff suspects Wells drowned, but investigators continue interviewing anyone who spent time with him that day. The official cause and manner of death remain undetermined pending toxicology results.
