Islam Chesnokov Set to Leave Hearts After Six Months, Returning to Kazakhstan

Hearts midfielder Islam Chesnokov is poised to leave the Scottish club and return to his homeland of Kazakhstan on a permanent basis. The transfer is expected to generate a six-figure fee for Hearts, marking an early end to a move that has not delivered the impact initially anticipated when the player arrived in January.

Chesnokov's departure comes after a brief and underwhelming stint in Edinburgh. The Kazakhstan international made 11 competitive appearances for Hearts, starting on six occasions and recording a single goal. The winger's limited impact on the pitch has prompted both the club and the player to pursue a parting of ways.

Return to Kazakhstan

Reports indicate that Tobol Kostanay, the player's former club, is on the verge of completing a deal to bring Chesnokov back. The move reunites the 26-year-old with the side where he previously played, with negotiations advancing toward a permanent agreement. Separate accounts suggest that Ordabasy Shymkent has also entered the race to secure the winger's services, signalling genuine competition among Kazakh clubs for his signature.

Hearts initially pursued Chesnokov in January 2025 following a protracted negotiation period, having targeted him the previous summer as well. Tobol's involvement in a title battle at that time meant the Kazakh club was unwilling to release their asset. The winger's contract situation eventually permitted his move in the winter window once his previous deal expired at the end of October, allowing him to register as a Hearts player when the transfer window reopened.

Squad Activity at Tynecastle

Despite Chesnokov's exit, Hearts have been actively strengthening their squad ahead of the new season. The club has already confirmed three arrivals: Josh McPake, MJ Kamson-Kamara, and Calvin Miller. Additional recruitment is imminent, with deals for Amadou Ba-Sy and Tom Renaud described as all but complete, whilst a fee has been agreed with York City for Malachi Fagan-Walcott.
