Jack White has launched his inaugural art exhibition, These Thoughts May Disappear, at Damien Hirst's Newport Street Gallery in London, marking the first major public presentation of his visual art practice. The exhibition showcases works created from White's philosophy of material transformation—a principle that has guided his entire creative life across music, design, and physical objects.
From Upholstery to Visual Art
White's first formal employment at age 15 was as an upholsterer's apprentice, a foundation that introduced him to the concept of rescuing discarded materials and bringing them back to life. By 21, he had opened his own upholstery shop, which doubled as a creative studio. This early discipline of restoration and reimagining has remained central to his artistic vision across every medium—from his revitalisation of blues and folk music to the physical spaces of Third Man Records and Third Man Pressing, both established in Detroit's historical Cass Corridor.
The artist describes growing up in Detroit, where waste collection days became opportunities for creative salvage. "If you have a truck and it's big garbage day and you're in Detroit, you start garbage picking," White explained during a gallery walkthrough. This practice of finding potential in abandoned objects—regluing chairs, refinishing wood, and reupholstering furniture—became his earliest education in transformation and creative problem-solving.
Design Identity and Creative Philosophy
White's commitment to deliberate design extends to every detail of his work. His first shop featured a strict colour palette of yellow, white, and black across tools and business materials—a discipline that would eventually crystallise into The White Stripes' iconic red, white, and black visual identity. This attention to colour, form, and intentional design creates a throughline connecting his music projects, record labels, and now his visual art practice.
In discussing his first exhibition, White emphasised the importance of ego removal in artistic creation. "People don't know this side of me. I want them to see that this came from a passionate place, in an attempt to try to get somewhere with it," he stated. The exhibition reveals a creative polymath who has consistently worked across disciplines, exploring those intersecting spaces where music, design, and visual art blur together.
