James Hunt Documentary Enters Production with Damon Hill and Bernie Ecclestone Contributing
A feature-length documentary on James Hunt has entered production with support from his estate and contributions from F1 champions.

Production company Deep Fusion has begun filming a feature-length documentary on legendary British Formula 1 driver James Hunt, with racing icons Damon Hill and Bernie Ecclestone now attached to contribute. The film, titled Hunt: We Need to Talk About James, is being created with full support from the Hunt estate and is scheduled for release around the 50th anniversary of Hunt's 1976 F1 World Championship victory at the Japanese Grand Prix on 24 October.
The Project and Vision
Director and producer Benjamin Field, who leads Deep Fusion, describes the documentary as an attempt to present Hunt beyond the sensationalism that has long defined public perception of the racing driver. The film intends to reveal untold stories from family members and close associates, offering viewers a more complete understanding of the man behind the caricature.
Field has previously worked on documentary projects involving artificial intelligence technology, including a film about television creator Gerry Anderson that used AI to repurpose archival audio. His approach to the Hunt project similarly aims to blend traditional documentary storytelling with modern production techniques.
Family Perspective and New Revelations
Freddie Hunt, James Hunt's son, expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating that his father has frequently been portrayed as a one-dimensional character.
"Dad has so often been painted as something of a caricature. I'm hugely excited that, for the first time, the world will see both sides of the man - and already during filming, stories have come to light that have never been spoken about before."
The production team includes Ewan Atkinson as producer working alongside the Hunt estate, with Jamie Anderson and Richard Wiseman serving as executive producer and archive producer respectively. The film's score is being composed by BAFTA-nominated musician Sam Gale.
Hunt's Legacy
James Hunt, who died in 1993 at age 43 following a heart attack, became one of Britain's most enduring sporting icons. Beyond his racing career, Hunt found recognition as a BBC motorsport commentator, building a second professional life that helped cement his place in popular culture. The 1976 championship remains his most celebrated achievement, clinched in dramatic circumstances during the Japanese Grand Prix.
The documentary distribution strategy and broadcast platform have not yet been announced. Deep Fusion is fully funding the production independently.
