Jasson Domínguez Could Become Trade Bait as Yankees Pursue Deadline Upgrades

Jasson Domínguez and fellow outfielder Spencer Jones could be available as trade pieces for the New York Yankees as general manager Brian Cashman seeks catcher and bullpen reinforcements ahead of the trade deadline. Both prospects have reached the majors but have failed to meet expectations, opening the door for potential change-of-scenery trades that could create roster flexibility for the Yankees' stretch run.

Domínguez's Inconsistent Performance

The 23-year-old switch-hitting outfielder received his first significant major league opportunity in 2025 after limited stints in 2023 and 2024. In 123 games last season, Domínguez posted a .257 batting average with 10 home runs, 47 RBIs and 23 stolen bases. This year, injuries to Aaron Judge and outfielder Trent Grisham created another opening in New York's outfield, but Domínguez has not capitalized on the opportunity. Through 39 games this season, he is hitting .229 with five home runs, 11 RBIs and six stolen bases, marking a decline from his previous production.

Yankees' Trade Strategy

New York has identified two primary areas requiring reinforcement: a right-handed hitting catcher and bullpen depth. While the Yankees are protecting their top two prospects—infielder George Lombard Jr. and right-handed pitcher Carlos Lagrange—they have signaled willingness to consider moving other prospects and former highly-rated players. Beyond Domínguez and Jones, younger prospects including shortstop Dax Kilby and pitcher Elmer Rodríguez remain in play as potential trade assets.

Jones, a 25-year-old first baseman standing 6-foot-7, has similarly underperformed at the major league level. In 30 games across two stints with the Yankees, he compiled a .233 average with two home runs and seven RBIs. However, at Triple-A, Jones has demonstrated more power with 14 home runs and a .951 on-base-plus-slugging percentage in 51 games. His early demotion back to the minor leagues this month signals the Yankees' immediate preference for other outfield options.

Both players retain the fundamental tools and young age that once made them top prospect prospects around baseball, positioning them as potential targets for other organizations seeking reclamation opportunities. With the trade deadline approaching, Domínguez and Jones represent the type of mid-level assets that could facilitate larger roster moves without requiring the Yankees to part with their most protected young talent.
