Jennifer Garner Details Decades of Paparazzi Harassment That Endangered Her Children and Community

Jennifer Garner has disclosed the serious safety dangers her family faced from paparazzi pursuit over decades, describing incidents where photographers knocked over children and created traffic hazards in residential neighborhoods. Speaking on the Shut Up Evan podcast while promoting her new series The Five Star Weekend, Garner recounted dangerous situations that prompted her and actress Halle Berry to testify before the California State Assembly Committee on Public Safety in 2013, ultimately leading to new child protection legislation.

The Scale of Daily Harassment

Garner detailed the extent of paparazzi behavior when her three children with ex-husband Ben Affleck were younger. When she drove through a yellow light, 15 vehicles would run the subsequent red light behind her. Photographers would drive onto residential lawns and hillsides to position themselves for shots. When her youngest played soccer, the sports association requested the family stop attending because 20 vehicles would arrive to photograph the matches, overwhelming the venue.

The actress described a particularly alarming incident at a pediatrician's office: "If you show up and you're trying to get into the door because you're blocked by photographers, there's something wrong with that. And the kids are paying the price." She recalled photographers becoming so aggressive that children were knocked over exiting preschool as photographers rushed to capture images of her or Affleck.

Legislative Action and Current Status

Garner's experiences motivated her advocacy work with Berry for stronger protections. Their testimony before state lawmakers resulted in the passage of California legislation designed to safeguard minors from invasive photography. Despite those legal protections, Garner revealed that her situation has not fundamentally changed.

She disclosed that two photographers have been assigned to follow her continuously for over 20 years. Rather than remaining adversarial throughout these decades, Garner described developing an "odd respect" with one longtime paparazzo, suggesting a complicated relationship that includes both moments of understanding and continued frustration. She noted calling police numerous times requesting even simple neighborhood walks with her children and dog without photographic pursuit.
