Joe Cordina Pleads Not Guilty to Assault Charges Following Petrol Station Incident

A former two-time IBF super-featherweight world champion has denied assaulting a man outside a petrol station in Cardiff, with proceedings underway in magistrates' court. Joe Cordina, 34, entered a not guilty plea to two assault charges related to an incident in the Pentwyn suburb during February.

Cordina appeared at Cardiff Magistrates' Court on Tuesday alongside Jamie O'Brien, 32, also charged in connection with the same incident. The court previously established that the assault charges between the two men are alleged to be directed at each other. His legal representative noted that the second charge Cordina faces stems from a single continuous incident.

District Judge Charlotte Murphy released Cordina on unconditional bail pending trial, which has been scheduled for 13 October. O'Brien's case was adjourned to 26 August, with no plea entered during the hearing. The charge denials come as Cordina faces significant disruptions to his boxing career—his application for a US visa was rejected, forcing cancellation of a planned 4 July bout for the WBO lightweight title in the United States.

The timing of the court proceedings coincides with what would have been a major career milestone for the Welsh boxer. His visa denial was announced through a social media statement, effectively removing him from an international title opportunity during a critical period in his competitive career.
