John Douglas, guitarist and founding member of Scottish indie rock outfit Trashcan Sinatras, has died at the age of 62 following a brief illness. The musician passed away peacefully in the early hours of Monday, August 3, surrounded by loved ones. His death comes just days after the band released their latest album, marking their first full-length record in a decade.

Career and Legacy

Born in Irvine on December 3, 1963, Douglas was a central figure in the band since its formation in 1986. As both guitarist and vocalist, he shaped the band's distinctive sound through his songwriting and instrumental work, known for melodic sophistication, literate wordplay, and carefully arranged guitar arrangements. Douglas appeared on all seven of the band's studio albums throughout their four-decade history.

Trashcan Sinatras achieved significant recognition with their debut album Cake, released in 1990. The record eventually reached the UK Top 10 following a 2023 re-release, some 33 years after its original debut. The band's latest release, Ever the Optimist, arrived on July 31, preceding Douglas's death by just three days.

The album's release was preceded by a 40th anniversary live performance at Irvine's Harbour Arts Centre, marking the first time all five band members had performed together on stage in nearly seven years. In a recent interview, Douglas described the reunion as deeply moving, noting the emotional weight of reuniting with his bandmates after such an extended period apart.
