Jonah Hill Says Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Training Makes Him Ready to Confront Critics Over Superbad Legacy
Jonah Hill says his extensive Brazilian jiu-jitsu training has made him ready to "annihilate" anyone who still defines him as the fat guy from Superbad.

Actor and comedian Jonah Hill has declared that his years of Brazilian jiu-jitsu training mean he is prepared to physically confront anyone who continues to identify him solely with his teenage character from Superbad. During an April appearance on the SmartLess podcast in Los Angeles, Hill directed blunt remarks toward hosts Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, and Sean Hayes about what he would do if challenged.
Hill's confidence stems from dedicated training in the martial art. He began practicing Brazilian jiu-jitsu at age 35 in late 2018, initially at Clockwork Jiu-Jitsu in New York City, where he attended four to five sessions weekly. His current trainer is Josh Griffiths, a third-degree black belt who has competed at Abu Dhabi World Pro events and regularly works with top UFC fighters. Despite his commitment, Hill acknowledged the physical toll the sport demands on his body.
Nearly two decades after Superbad's release catapulted Hill and co-star Michael Cera to prominence, the actor remains frustrated by audience members who reduce his entire career to that single role. During the podcast recording, Hill expressed his irritation bluntly: "My favourite thing is people are like, 'Oh Jonah Hill, fucking fat guy from Superbad.' And I'm like, 'I would fucking annihilate you, dude.'" He extended the challenge to the podcast hosts themselves, stating he would defeat all three of them in a physical confrontation.
Hill's wife has offered grounding perspective on his martial arts enthusiasm, reminding him that professional fighting is not a realistic career path given his established work in comedy and film. The actor has previously discussed how weight-related criticism affected him during his rise to fame. In a 2018 appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Hill reflected on spending much of his young adult life hearing negative comments about his physical appearance, and he credited more recent personal development with allowing him to present himself authentically to the world without shame.
