Tornadoes Strike Tri-State Region While Animal Sanctuary Faces Funding Crisis

An apparent tornado touched down in Franklin County, Indiana, prompting National Weather Service surveys and widespread damage assessments across the Tri-State area. The same period has exposed a critical funding shortfall at a local farm animal sanctuary that has forced it to turn away rescue requests from the community.

Tornado Damage Assessment Underway

Multiple tornado warnings were issued across the Tri-State region, with Franklin County experiencing what officials describe as an apparent tornado. The National Weather Service has indicated it will conduct a formal survey of the damage. Photographs documented the aftermath, showing downed barn structures and uprooted trees in the affected area. Tornado sirens activated as the storm system passed over populated regions, prompting residents to seek shelter.

Animal Sanctuary Faces Unprecedented Funding Shortage

Foreverland Farm, a nonprofit animal sanctuary based in Mount Orab, Ohio, has encountered severe financial constraints that have forced difficult operational decisions. The facility's funding has declined by approximately 50 percent compared to previous years, according to founder and executive director Brittney Kane. This dramatic reduction has prevented the sanctuary from fulfilling community rescue requests—Kane reported receiving roughly 50 inquiries about animal placement assistance, none of which could be accommodated due to financial limitations.

The sanctuary, which operates on 15 acres and houses 110 animals, requires approximately $1,500 daily to maintain operations. Animals under its care include chickens, goats, sheep, pigs, a llama, a cow, and multiple horses. Some residents were rescued from difficult circumstances, while others were surrendered by owners unable to afford medical care. The facility, established in 2018 and positioned on its current property for three years, has become a refuge for animals with complex needs and individual stories.

Emergency Fundraising Initiative

To address the immediate crisis, Foreverland Farm has launched a matching grant campaign through a private foundation willing to contribute up to $10,000 if the sanctuary raises the same amount. As of the campaign's progress, the organization had secured $6,000, with the remaining total needed by the end of the month. Kane stated that success would provide sufficient funding for animal feed for at least two additional months, offering temporary relief while the sanctuary pursues longer-term sustainable solutions.
