Joseph Ziegler Steps Down as Marathon Game Director at Bungie

Marathon game director Joseph Ziegler has announced his exit from Bungie, effective immediately, with assistant game director Del Chafe III stepping in to lead the troubled extraction shooter alongside creative director Julia Nardin. The leadership change comes at a critical moment for the project, which has faced significant challenges since its launch earlier this year.

Ziegler, who joined Bungie in December 2022 to oversee the Marathon project, disclosed his departure on social media without providing specific reasons for the move. He stated he is heading toward "something new, somewhere else" but did not elaborate on future plans. In his departure statement, Ziegler acknowledged the team's progress and expressed confidence in the incoming leadership structure, noting that both Chafe and Nardin "have been operating in a strong leadership capacity" and are "ready to guide Marathon into the next chapter."

The timing of Ziegler's departure underscores the commercial struggles facing Marathon. Sony recorded a $765 million impairment loss connected to Bungie's underperformance in May. Last month, the company implemented significant workforce reductions, affecting nearly 300 staff members at Bungie's Bellevue, Washington headquarters, with layoffs impacting "most of the Destiny team and some Marathon team members." The extraction shooter has struggled to build momentum despite a dedicated player base since its launch, particularly following the announcement that Destiny 2 support would conclude.

Path Forward for Marathon

Despite the leadership transition, Bungie has signaled its commitment to Marathon's long-term development. The studio has teased upcoming story content planned for "the next few years" and hinted at "new and surprising ways" the game will evolve. Season 2 is currently underway, with Season 3 scheduled to launch in September. The studio previously held the position of Marathon director before Ziegler's appointment; Chris Barrett occupied the role until his departure in August 2024.
