Josh Kelly Defends IBF Light-Middleweight Title Against Caoimhin Agyarko in Saudi Arabia

Josh Kelly will defend his IBF light-middleweight title against Caoimhin Agyarko on Saturday in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, with the Sunderland fighter claiming that achieving world champion status has fundamentally changed his mentality and ring performance. Kelly captured the belt in January by defeating Bakhram Murtazaliev in his 20th professional bout, rebounding from his sole career loss to David Avanesyan in 2021. The title defence forms part of the undercard to Anthony Joshua's heavyweight return against Kristian Prenga at the Jeddah Superdome.

A Champion's Transformation

Kelly has repeatedly emphasized the psychological impact of becoming a world champion. Speaking at Thursday's final news conference, he stated that the experience has created a noticeably different version of himself both in training and preparation. Those closest to him, including his coaching team, have observed the shift in his work ethic and demeanor. Kelly attributed this partly to the confidence that comes with completing a major objective—moving from believing he could win a title to knowing he has achieved it.

The 20-victory fighter promised to demonstrate the levels that separate him from his challenger. He referenced potential future opponents including Jaron Ennis and Sebastian Fundora, suggesting that with the confidence now embedded in his approach, he represents a different threat than the version opponents faced before his title win. Kelly indicated that his victory over Murtazaliev would serve as a template, with plans to apply the same combination of movement and measured attacks that proved effective in that fight.

Agyarko's Path to Opportunity

Caoimhin Agyarko of Belfast earned this title shot through adversity and perseverance. After being released by promoter Matchroom following a career-best victory over Troy Williamson in 2023, Agyarko was scheduled to face Brandon Adams in a final eliminator in April. However, Adams collapsed before the weigh-in, forcing the IBF to pursue alternative arrangements. Rather than order another eliminator between Agyarko and Murtazaliev, the federation approved Kelly's voluntary title defence against the Belfast challenger.

Undefeated across 18 contests with seven stoppage victories, Agyarko demonstrated remarkable durability in his most recent outing against Ishmael Davis in December. After being knocked down in the 12th round with his right eye swollen shut, he survived to the final bell and secured a split-decision victory. This came after suffering damage to his left eye in a previous points victory over Ryan Kelly, indicating that Agyarko must avoid becoming a stationary target against Kelly's measured striking approach.
