Kroger Outprices Walmart and Aldi Across Majority of Grocery Staples
The Cincinnati-based grocer plans to expand price reductions across thousands of items following a company initiative announced to enhance affordability.

Kroger has emerged as the most affordable grocery retailer among major U.S. supermarket chains, according to a recent pricing analysis. The Cincinnati-based grocer compiled a total basket cost of $30 while purchasing 15 popular everyday items, undercutting competitors Walmart ($30.95), Aldi ($33.15), and Albertsons ($35.58). Kroger claimed the lowest prices on 10 of the 15 products examined, demonstrating particular strength in pantry staples and fresh categories.
Product-by-Product Performance
Kroger's pricing advantage proved strongest in core pantry items. The grocer offered canned diced tomatoes at 72 cents for a 14.5-ounce can, spaghetti at 96 cents for a 16-ounce pack, and granulated sugar at $2.56 for a four-pound bag. Fresh items also reflected competitive pricing, with a dozen large eggs at $1.29 and a 20-ounce loaf of wheat bread at $1.40.
Walmart secured the second-lowest basket cost and won on three items, performing well in proteins and rice varieties. The Bentonville-based retailer offered chicken breast at $1.95 per pound, white rice at $1.34 for a two-pound bag, and canned black beans at 85 cents for a 15-ounce can. Aldi claimed the cheapest gallon of whole milk at $3.05 but finished third overall. Albertsons trailed the group despite offering competitive pricing in select categories.
Broader Price Reduction Strategy
The timing of this analysis aligns with Kroger's broader effort to enhance affordability across its stores. The company announced plans to reduce prices on thousands of items, with Chief Executive Greg Foran indicating the retailer will test price cuts before expanding them across its network. Kroger intends to achieve these reductions by cutting internal operational expenses, streamlining direct merchandise imports, and deploying technology more effectively.
