Liberal Democrats Call for Air Conditioning in All New UK Homes as Heat Crisis Worsens

The Liberal Democrats have unveiled a "climate ready" housing programme requiring all new UK homes to be equipped with air conditioning or alternative cooling systems, citing Britain's dangerous lack of preparation for rising temperatures. The party also calls for mandatory cooling systems in essential public buildings including schools and health facilities, responding to growing health concerns from extreme heat across the country.

The Housing Crisis During Extreme Heat

British homes are increasingly proving unsuitable for prolonged high temperatures, with current passive cooling measures insufficient to protect residents. The proposal comes as the UK Health Protection Agency issued yellow heat alerts affecting south-east England, south-west regions, the Midlands, and Yorkshire and the Humber, with London forecast to reach 32 degrees Celsius. Tim Farron, the party's environment spokesperson, stated that families across Britain are bearing the cost of government inaction on extreme heat preparedness.

Polling commissioned by the Liberal Democrats revealed that 28 percent of people purchased fans or air conditioning units during recent heatwaves, while 26 percent reported feeling unwell or faint from heat exposure. These figures underscore public concern about indoor temperature management during summer months. Currently, only approximately 4 million of Britain's 30 million-plus homes have air conditioning, though the number has doubled in the past three years as temperatures have risen.

The Liberal Democrats' proposal makes cooling systems a legal requirement for developers, with particular emphasis on protecting vulnerable populations including elderly residents and those with health conditions. Gideon Amos, the party's housing spokesperson, argues that air conditioning is becoming essential rather than optional in UK housing design. The proposal emerges alongside broader concerns about Britain's climate vulnerability. England experienced exceptionally dry conditions during the summer, with July rainfall falling to just 1 percent of average levels in southern regions, creating severe wildfire risks across the country. These environmental pressures have intensified debate over whether housing standards adequately reflect climate change projections.
