The seismic event occurred near the fishing town of Puerto Madero at a depth of 15.2 kilometers, triggering evacuations across Mexico, Guatemala, and El Salvador as a precautionary measure.

The Earthquake and Initial Response

The US Tsunami Warning System issued alerts for hazardous waves along Mexican and Guatemalan coasts following the Friday morning event. Mexico's navy secretary Admiral Raymundo Morales stated there was "no serious impact" from the initial quake, though residents were instructed to avoid beaches pending further assessment. The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration recorded waves measuring 0.3 meters above tide level in Puerto Madero and Chiapas, Mexico, later confirming the tsunami threat had diminished within hours.

Governor Salomón Jara Cruz of Oaxaca reported the tremor was felt with "moderate intensity" across the southern state. Eduardo Ramírez, governor of Chiapas near the epicenter, suspended administrative activities and urged private sector cooperation while emphasizing no serious damage had been documented. In Guatemala and El Salvador, the shaking prompted building evacuations and residents fleeing homes, according to reports from the region.

Aftershocks and Regional Impact

A series of aftershocks ranging from magnitude 4.7 to 6 followed the primary event. Guatemala's President Bernardo Arévalo separately noted a magnitude 5.6 earthquake centered in Quetzaltenango, deploying the country's emergency management agency without reporting fatalities. The tsunami warning center extended precautionary alerts to El Salvador, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, and Honduras, though forecasted waves remained below 0.3 meters above tide level for these regions.
