McDonald's Employee Remains in ICE Burn Unit After Coworker Throws Hot Oil in Yuba City Incident
A 20-year-old McDonald's worker in Yuba City remains hospitalized with severe burns after a coworker allegedly threw hot oil on him.

A 20-year-old McDonald's employee in Northern California remains in intensive care following an alleged workplace assault in which a coworker threw hot liquid on him, causing severe burns across multiple areas of his body. The suspect has been arrested and charged with multiple felonies.
The Incident
Jacob Smith sustained burns to his face, neck, right arm and back during an incident at a Yuba City McDonald's location. According to his mother, Amber Smith, the attack occurred while her son was preparing to end his shift and was counting money in the office. "He was in the office getting ready to count the money when he saw out of the corner of his eye something, and he just turned and the oil was just thrown on him," she said.
The alleged assault took place on May 30, with the suspect identified as Jalani Bluett, 23. Bluett reportedly fled the restaurant immediately after the incident and was arrested the following day by Sutter County deputies.
Legal Charges and Medical Status
Bluett has been charged with felony battery with serious bodily injury, felony mayhem, and felony assault with a deadly weapon. Court records indicate he has pleaded not guilty. His public defender has not publicly commented on the case. The restaurant's owner and operator, John Cook, confirmed that Bluett is no longer employed with the organization.
Smith remains hospitalized in the UC Davis burn unit nearly a week after the incident, undergoing specialized treatment. His mother described the extent of his injuries and his condition: the burns extend across one side of his face, down his neck, his entire right arm, and across his back. She noted that the pain has been so severe that doctors can only manage it within an intensive care setting. Medical staff are currently focused on reducing the size of the burns on his back and neck to minimize the need for skin grafting procedures. Smith is scheduled to undergo surgery in the coming week, with his family indicating that the duration of his recovery remains uncertain.
"I want justice to be served. I want him to serve the time he needs to serve for what he's done to my son... I just want him to understand what he did, really understand what he did, and the pain that he caused to my son is excruciating," his mother said.
Workplace Context
The incident has raised questions about workplace safety at the location. The restaurant owner stated that employee safety and well-being remain top priorities. Investigators have not disclosed what may have led to the alleged assault between the two employees. The specifics of their working relationship and any prior conflicts between them have not been made public.
