Kelsey Plum Traded to Phoenix Mercury as Los Angeles Sparks End Rebuild

The Los Angeles Sparks have traded five-time All-Star guard Kelsey Plum to the Phoenix Mercury, marking a rare mid-season move involving an elite WNBA performer. Los Angeles acquired Monique Akoa Makani, a 2027 first-round pick, and a 2028 second-round selection in the exchange, sources confirmed.

The End of a Failed Rebuild Attempt

The Sparks acquired Plum using the No. 2 pick in the 2025 draft—which became All-Star Dominique Malonga—as part of an aggressive strategy to end their postseason drought dating to 2020. The plan deteriorated following Plum's lower leg injury sustained this season. With a 10-17 record and standing five-and-a-half games below the playoff line, Los Angeles abandoned the season and moved its marquee player rather than risk losing her for nothing in free agency.

Plum has appeared in only 12 games but ranks second in league scoring with 23.9 points per game while distributing 6.4 assists nightly. Her field-goal percentage among top-10 scorers trails only A'ja Wilson, establishing her as one of the league's most efficient offensive options. League executives indicated she would not re-sign with the Sparks without the trade, forcing management's hand.

Phoenix's Offensive Solution

The Mercury pursued Plum's acquisition when she departed the Las Vegas Aces last offseason. Phoenix has struggled with offensive production this season, ranking 12th in offensive rating following Satou Sabally's departure to New York. Plum's arrival strengthens the Mercury alongside established cores Kahleah Copper and Aneesah Morrow, both signed through the next season.

The transaction represents only the second trade of an All-WNBA caliber player during the season in recent memory, the previous instance occurring in 2015 when the Chicago Sky dealt Sylvia Fowles to Minnesota. The Lynx won that championship with Fowles earning Finals MVP honors.
