A midland news incident has sparked an active manhunt after a suspect fired a rifle at a police officer during a traffic stop Wednesday night. Victor Mata Villarreal, identified as the shooter, remains at large and is wanted for attempted capital murder of a peace officer. The officer involved was not injured during the exchange of gunfire.
What Happened
The confrontation began around 11:23 p.m. on Anetta Street when a Midland Police officer attempted to stop a vehicle. According to police, the driver did not comply immediately and continued driving for several blocks before stopping in the 4700 block of Comanche Drive. Once the vehicle halted, the driver exited and fired multiple rounds from a rifle at the officer. The officer returned fire, but Villarreal re-entered the vehicle and fled the scene. His car was discovered abandoned a short distance away, though an extensive search did not locate him.

Residents in the neighborhood were startled by the sudden gunfire. Doorbell camera footage captured the tense moments, with the sound of shots audible to nearby homes. One resident, Alejandra Ortiz, described the experience as traumatic. "It shook the walls of the whole house, it just felt like someone was trying to come in by force, but it was just the sound of it," she stated. Ortiz noted that the neighborhood remained chaotic throughout the night with police vehicles and sirens, leaving residents without immediate explanations.

Villarreal is described as a white male, approximately 6 feet 4 inches tall, weighing around 221 pounds with brown eyes. The Texas Rangers are investigating the officer-involved shooting portion of the incident, while authorities continue their search. The U.S. Marshals Service has issued a wanted poster and is actively involved in the investigation.
