Air Quality Map Shows Washington and Oregon Cities Face Hazardous Smoke from Dozens of Wildfires

Wildfire smoke from eastern Oregon and Washington is forecast to blanket western cities including Seattle and Portland through at least Wednesday, with air quality reaching unhealthy levels across the Interstate 5 corridor. The combined effects of smoke and extreme heat—with temperatures approaching or exceeding 90 degrees in major urban centers—create a significant public health challenge for the region.

Smoke Source and Geographic Spread

The source of the degraded air quality stems from approximately 30 large fires burning across central and eastern Oregon, with three particularly destructive blazes in the Spokane, Washington, metro area destroying hundreds of homes and businesses. Offshore winds blowing from the east and northeast are pushing smoke westward, affecting the entire Interstate 5 corridor from Seattle, Tacoma, and Olympia southward through Oregon's Willamette Valley, including Portland, Salem, Corvallis, and Eugene. Ground-level smoke is also persisting in Boise, with potential to reach as far south as Salt Lake City.

The smoke layer will begin to thin and turn eastward on Thursday as regular west-to-east wind patterns return, though residents in the Rockies can expect smoke to arrive late in the week. This same weather system is expected to affect tourism destinations including Yellowstone and Aspen with reduced air quality.

Heat and Air Quality Convergence

Compounding the smoke issue, the same atmospheric pattern driving wildfire smoke westward is also intensifying heat across western Washington and Oregon. Daytime highs in Seattle may approach 90 degrees, while Portland and some neighborhoods extending to Eugene could reach the upper 90s or even surpass 100 degrees in the hottest areas. Dense smoke may reduce afternoon temperatures by several degrees compared to clearer conditions. These highs could approach or break daily temperature records from Seattle to Medford, Oregon.

Relief is expected to arrive gradually this weekend as conditions trend cooler. The extended forecast indicates monsoon thunderstorms may develop well into the northern Rockies next week, though precipitation poses mixed consequences—while rain is needed to combat ongoing drought, even light rainfall in recently burned areas risks dangerous flash flooding and debris flows.
