New York Times Connections Puzzle Expands with Sports Edition and Daily Analytics Features
The New York Times Connections today has expanded beyond its original format with a dedicated Sports Edition created by The Athletic.

The New York Times has expanded its popular Connections puzzle game with a Sports Edition variant and introduced new player analytics features. The Athletic, owned by the New York Times Company, launched Connections: Sports Edition as a dedicated daily puzzle focused on sports-related groupings. Additionally, registered players can now track detailed performance metrics through a Connections Bot similar to the existing Wordle analytics tool.
Sports Edition Launch
Connections: Sports Edition operates on the same core mechanics as the original puzzle—grouping 16 words into four categories of four items each. Created by Mark Cooper, managing editor for college sports at The Athletic, the Sports Edition features thematic categories specific to athletics. Recent puzzles have included groupings such as teams based in Kansas, materials found on a baseball field, and Lionel Messi's career clubs. The puzzle generates a new board daily at midnight in each player's time zone.
Analytics and Tracking Features
The Times Games section now offers registered players access to performance data through the Connections Bot. Players can monitor metrics including total puzzles completed, win rate percentage, number of perfect scores achieved, and current win streaks. This mirrors functionality available for Wordle players and allows enthusiasts to document their puzzle-solving progress over time. The analytics dashboard enables competitive players to review their performance patterns and compete informally through score sharing.
Puzzle Difficulty Levels
Each Connections puzzle presents four category groups with increasing difficulty levels, color-coded from yellow (easiest) through green, blue, and purple (most challenging). The standard daily puzzle requires players to identify the common thread connecting each group of four words. Recent puzzles have featured categories ranging from basketball violations like "double dribble" and "travel" to abstract connections such as "words that follow pop" (culture, fly, quiz, tart). The Sports Edition maintains this difficulty progression while centering categories exclusively on athletic themes.
