Phil Foden has committed to a fresh start at Manchester City under new manager Enzo Maresca, signing a four-year contract extension through 2030 and vowing to recapture the form that made him the Professional Footballers' Association Player of the Year in 2024. The 26-year-old midfielder, who has struggled over the past two seasons after a period of exceptional performance, views the managerial transition as an opportunity to reignite his career at Etihad Stadium.

A Difficult Stretch and Path Forward

Foden's trajectory at Manchester City has shifted dramatically. In the 2023-24 campaign, he scored 19 goals as City won the Premier League and earned individual recognition as both the league's Player of the Season and the PFA's top-rated player. That dominant form has not held. Last season, he managed only 10 goals across all competitions and entered a goalless drought that extended to 31 consecutive appearances for both club and country.

The decline in performance led to Foden's exclusion from England's squad for the 2026 World Cup, a disappointment that weighed on the academy product. However, Manchester City's swift decision to offer him a new contract signals the club's continued faith in his potential. Foden expressed optimism about working with Maresca, who previously served as the club's academy coach and first-team assistant under Guardiola before moving to Leicester City and then returning to manage City. The midfielder's familiarity with Maresca appears to have eased his transition. "It's very strange but I know Enzo from before, so that also helps. I know him quite well and what he is about," Foden said. Foden emphasized that the contract extension and fresh managerial setup have created mental clarity. "It has made me feel relaxed and I can just concentrate on being the best version of me and give back to the football club for them trusting in me," he stated.
