Polish Airspace Breached as Russian Missiles Strike Ukraine in Massive Attack

Russian cruise missiles penetrated Polish airspace during a large-scale overnight assault on Ukraine, prompting NATO to scramble fighter jets and triggering air raid sirens across Polish border towns. The attack killed at least eight civilians in Ukraine, including two young children, while President Volodymyr Zelensky issued an urgent appeal to Western allies for additional air defense systems.

The Attack Unfolds

The assault began in the early morning hours as Russian forces launched what Zelensky described as a "massive" strike involving both ballistic missiles and cruise missiles. Ukrainian air force officials had warned the president of a high probability of the attack occurring overnight. The bombardment targeted multiple Ukrainian cities, with Kyiv experiencing multiple explosions as Russian missiles struck the capital.

In Kryvyi Rih, a city in central Ukraine, six people died including children aged five and twelve. One additional death was reported in Kyiv, while Lviv sustained injuries to at least fifteen residents, with others feared trapped beneath rubble. The attacks damaged non-residential buildings across multiple cities, with fires breaking out in Kyiv as residents sought shelter.

NATO Activation and Polish Airspace Breach

The most significant escalation came when a Kh-101 cruise missile crossed into Polish airspace at approximately 3:30 a.m. Polish operational command detected the unidentified object moving westward and dispatched an F-16 fighter jet to identify and intercept it. Before positive identification could be made, the missile disappeared from radar at 3:46 a.m. A Mi-24 helicopter crew subsequently located a probable crash site in an undeveloped area near the town of Tarnawa-Kolonia in the Lublin Voivodeship, approximately four miles from Otrocz and fifty-six miles from the Ukrainian border.

Air raid sirens sounded across towns in the Lublin region, with Polish authorities confirming the airspace breach as credible information from the Government Security Centre. The Polish Armed Forces activated available forces and resources in response to the threat. NATO scrambled additional fighter jets as the incident unfolded, marking a direct military presence from the alliance during the assault.

Zelensky's Plea for Defense Systems

Zelensky emphasized that civilian lives depended directly on Western support, calling for immediate provision of Patriot air defense missiles and other systems. Writing on social media, he stressed that partners understood the gravity of the situation and the consequences of further delays in military assistance. The Ukrainian leader specifically appealed to the United States and other NATO allies capable of supplying air defense capabilities.
