Prince George will likely inherit the Prince of Wales title from his father when William becomes king, following a tradition that has defined the British monarchy for centuries. The title is not automatically passed down but must be formally granted by the reigning sovereign, meaning William would need to bestow it on his 13-year-old son. Royal experts believe the tradition is unlikely to break, given the monarchy's deep commitment to established customs.

How the Title Transfer Works

The Prince of Wales title operates differently from the throne itself. While succession to the crown follows strict rules of primogeniture, the Prince of Wales title requires explicit action from the reigning monarch. The Royal Family has confirmed there is no automatic succession to this historic title—the heir apparent must be formally created Prince of Wales by the sovereign.

King Charles III demonstrated the speed at which this process can occur. Within a single day of ascending to the throne following Queen Elizabeth II's death in September 2022, Charles appointed William as the new Prince of Wales. Royal expert Huw Thomas suggested William would likely follow his father's example and act quickly, noting that Charles "barely waited 24 hours" before passing the title to his son.

Other Titles George Will Receive Automatically

While the Prince of Wales title requires formal appointment, Prince George will automatically receive other significant honors when William becomes king. The Duchy of Cornwall, established in 1337 by King Edward III, will pass to George as a matter of law. This private estate, consisting of land, property, and investments, currently generates annual income that supports William's public, charitable, and private activities. George would assume this same financial and administrative responsibility.

Additionally, George will inherit the traditional Scottish titles associated with the heir to the throne, including Duke of Rothesay. These honors come with considerable financial responsibilities, as the Duchy of Cornwall surplus provides substantial income for the Duke. George has been gradually prepared for these future duties, including his participation as a page boy at King Charles's coronation in 2023.

Will William Break Tradition?

Royal observers believe the likelihood of William declining to grant George the Prince of Wales title is extremely low. Thomas emphasized that "the monarchy is built on tradition" and suggested it would be "quite stunning" if such an established custom were discontinued.
