Real Madrid's £129 Million Alvarez Bid Rejected as Atletico Madrid Mocks Rivals on Social Media
Real Madrid's record £129 million offer for Julian Alvarez was rejected by Atletico Madrid with a defiant social media response.

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez's headline-grabbing £129 million bid for Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez has been flatly rejected, with the Spanish club publicly mocking their rivals on social media. Alvarez remains contracted to Atletico until 2030 under terms that include a €500 million release clause, effectively placing him beyond Real Madrid's reach.
The rejection came with particular sting from Atletico's official social media account, which dismissed Real Madrid's approach as laughable. In a series of posts, Atletico reminded their cross-city rivals of Alvarez's astronomical release clause and stated they would not consider any offer whatsoever. The club also took the opportunity to accuse Real Madrid of attempting to "steal" players from their academy, referencing historical tensions between the two institutions.
The Record Bid and Political Context
Perez's offer represents what would be Real Madrid's largest transfer expenditure in club history. Before his re-election as president, Perez had promised supporters that he would immediately pursue a marquee signing, describing it as an offer to a "great player" from a major Champions League club worth approximately €150 million. Initial speculation suggested the target might be Bayern Munich's Michael Olise, but Perez later clarified the bid was directed elsewhere, ultimately revealing Alvarez as his chosen target.
The timing reflects Perez's electoral campaign strategy. His political challenger, Enrique Riquelme, had promised to sign Erling Haaland if elected, even going as far as to display a shirt bearing the Manchester City forward's name. Perez's counter-offer of a record bid was partly positioned as a demonstration of ambition and financial muscle to Real Madrid's fanbase during the election period.
Alvarez's Journey and Current Standing
The 26-year-old Argentine striker joined Atletico Madrid from Manchester City for £81.5 million in August 2024, representing a substantial profit for City, who had signed him for just £14.1 million. At City, Alvarez scored 36 goals in 106 appearances while winning six major trophies, including a place in the Treble-winning team. However, he became dissatisfied with his role as a backup to Erling Haaland and sought a move to become a primary striker elsewhere. At Atletico, Alvarez has since recorded 49 goals and 17 assists across 106 matches, earning praise from former Arsenal striker Thierry Henry for his work rate and tactical intelligence.
Despite this impressive productivity, Atletico Madrid faces an uphill battle in La Liga's title race, finishing third in 2025 and fourth previously. This context makes Alvarez an even more valuable asset to the club, particularly as they attempt to close the gap on Barcelona and Real Madrid.
