Robert De Niro's Tribeca Film Festival Exposed in Major Data Breach Affecting Multiple Hollywood Stars

A major data breach connected to Robert De Niro's Tribeca Film Festival has exposed the personal contact details of numerous high-profile celebrities, including Angelina Jolie, George Lucas, and Martin Scorsese. Security researcher Jeremiah Fowler identified over 666,000 records containing phone numbers and private email addresses that were made publicly accessible through three improperly secured databases.

Scope of the Breach

The compromised information stemmed from cloud storage systems associated with the New York-based festival, which De Niro founded in 2002. Among the exposed celebrities were directors George Lucas and Martin Scorsese, actors Angelina Jolie, Sharon Stone, Rami Malek, and Neil Patrick Harris, filmmaker Danny Boyle, and Michael Douglas. Fowler, a researcher with Black Hills Information Security, described the incident as "by far the biggest collection of celebrity data" he has ever encountered.

The records primarily consisted of marketing materials and press releases spanning from 2019 onward. However, one database contained a backup folder labeled "contacts" that included sensitive personal information. A source indicated that the vast majority of exposed contact details belonged to managers and agents rather than the celebrities themselves, though the breach still created significant security risks for those involved.

How the Breach Occurred

Festival officials attributed the exposure to human error, with three separate databases left unprotected on a cloud system. Fowler reported the discovery to the festival's management, who responded quickly to remove the databases from public access. A legal representative from the organization subsequently confirmed they were actively investigating the matter. The duration of the public exposure remains unclear, though Fowler's intervention prevented further unauthorized access to the highly sensitive records.

Security experts highlighted the unusual nature of the breach given how carefully high-profile figures typically guard their personal information. The exposed contact details could have potentially been leveraged for targeted malware attacks or fraudulent schemes against the celebrities or their representatives.
