Rockstar Games has announced a free upgrade program for Grand Theft Auto V, allowing players on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and older PC versions to transition to current-generation platforms starting June 18. The move represents a significant shift in the publisher's strategy, as the current-generation versions originally launched as paid upgrades at $39.99 in March 2022. The initiative arrives as the gaming community anticipates the November 19 release of Grand Theft Auto VI.

Players holding PS4 or digital Xbox One copies of Grand Theft Auto V can upgrade to the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X/S versions at no cost. PC players with legacy editions gain access to the Enhanced edition through the same free upgrade mechanism. The transition preserves player progression, with save data and Grand Theft Auto Online advancement transferable across platform generations. GTA+ subscription members gain access to the story mode through the GTA+ Games Library.

Technical Enhancements and Performance Gains

The upgraded versions deliver substantial technical improvements. Both console editions support resolutions up to 4K, ray-traced lighting effects, enhanced texture quality, extended draw distances, and frame rates reaching 60 frames per second. The PlayStation 5 version incorporates 3D audio capabilities and DualSense controller haptic feedback.
