Sacha Baron Cohen Lost Freddie Mercury Role to Rami Malek After Queen Band Rejected Him

Sacha Baron Cohen was passed over to portray Freddie Mercury in the 2018 Oscar-winning film Bohemian Rhapsody, with surviving Queen band members blocking his involvement in the project. The role instead went to Rami Malek, whose performance earned him the Academy Award for Best Actor. The decision reportedly hinged on concerns about Cohen's suitability for the historically significant biopic.

The Casting Decision

Cohen had been attached to the Freddie Mercury biopic during its development phase. However, the surviving members of Queen exercised creative influence over the film's direction and casting choices. The band's intervention proved decisive in removing Cohen from consideration for the lead role.

Robert Taylor, speaking on behalf of Queen, delivered a blunt assessment of Cohen's candidacy. Taylor stated that Cohen would have been unsuitable for the part, citing concerns about his acting abilities and physical appearance. He claimed Cohen was "pushy" and lacked the range necessary to capture Mercury's complexity as both a shy immigrant who transformed into a global rock icon and a pivotal LGBTQ+ cultural figure.

Malek's Success and the Road Not Taken

Rami Malek, who was considerably less famous than Cohen at the time of casting, accepted the role and delivered a critically acclaimed performance. The film became a massive commercial success, earning nearly £1 billion globally and securing multiple Academy Award nominations and wins. Malek's portrayal earned him the Best Actor Oscar, one of cinema's highest honours.

Cohen's professional standing in 2018 was notably strong. The same year Bohemian Rhapsody was released, he earned two separate Academy Award nominations: one for Best Supporting Actor for his dramatic role in Aaron Sorkin's The Trial of the Chicago 7, and another for Best Adapted Screenplay for Borat Subsequent Moviefilm. These nominations demonstrated his range across comedy and serious drama, yet Queen's leadership remained unconvinced of his suitability for their late frontman's story.

Some industry observers speculated that Cohen might have won the Best Actor award had he remained attached to the Mercury project.
