San Diego Mormon Church Temple Opens to Public After Three-Year Renovation
The mormon church's San Diego California Temple is welcoming the public through mid-July following extensive renovations that lasted three years.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has opened its San Diego California Temple to public visitation for the first time in 33 years, following a comprehensive renovation that began in mid-2023. The open house runs from June 18 through July 11, with formal dedication scheduled for August 23.
Public Access and Community Response
The temple, located in La Jolla, closed in July 2023 for extensive interior and exterior work. Community members and local officials have emphasized that the space, while sacred to church members, is not closed to public understanding. Elizabeth Ingersoll, a community member, noted that the temple represents "a really beautiful but very basic space" where "what's special in there is the spirit." The open house provides an opportunity for the curious and friends of church members to witness the renovated facility. Admission is free, though reservations are requested.
High-profile community members have also engaged with the reopening. Eric Weddle, a former San Diego Chargers player, reflected on his personal connection to the space, recalling that he and his wife were married at the temple in 2005. For Weddle and other church members, the temple represents a place of "eternal perspective" and guidance on matters of faith and purpose.
Spiritual and Architectural Significance
Church leadership has underscored the temple's importance to the faith. Elder Neil L. Andersen of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles described the temple as "the most sacred place on earth" to church members, characterized as a space of "holiness, of peace, of revelation." Within the temple, members participate in ceremonies including baptisms and sealings—marriages performed according to church doctrine. Elder I. Raymond Egbo expressed hope that visitors would experience a spiritual recognition of the space as "God's house," even before its formal rededication.
Church representatives have also emphasized the temple's appeal to younger generations. Local members noted that youth are drawn to the space as a refuge from worldly concerns, reinforcing the temple's role as a multigenerational spiritual center for the San Diego-area faith community.
