Scottie Scheffler, the world's top-ranked golfer, will make his debut at the 3M Open in Minnesota this week, an appearance that has already increased ticket sales by 25-30 percent and represents the most significant player commitment in the tournament's short history. The event, held at TPC Twin Cities in Blaine, Minnesota, has long pursued the sport's elite competitors, but Scheffler's participation marks an unprecedented draw for the venue.

How Scheffler's Commitment Came Together

Tournament executive director Hollis Cavner revealed that negotiations with Scheffler's camp extended over several years. Cavner, who serves as CEO of Pro Links Sports and has managed recruitment at other PGA Tour stops including the Valspar Championship and Wells Fargo Championship, explained that securing Scheffler required patience and strategic timing. The breakthrough came when this year's schedule aligned perfectly: Scheffler could compete in the 3M Open while returning from Europe after the Open Championship, the final major of the season.

Cavner stated his familiarity with Scheffler's agent, Blake Smith, and his friendship with Scheffler's long-time coach, Randy Smith, facilitated the relationship. The official announcement arrived in May, though Cavner had known of the commitment approximately one month prior. "We have been talking to him about coming for years," Cavner said. "This year it worked with the schedule where he could play on the way back from Europe, so it really just worked out great."

Tournament Impact and Schedule Positioning

The 3M Open, which launched in 2019, has previously hosted major winners including Bryson DeChambeau, Collin Morikawa, Justin Thomas, and Brooks Koepka, though mostly before their major championship victories. Scheffler's entry represents a different category of draw. Cavner noted that the tournament has already exceeded its sales projections, with additional ticket purchases expected throughout the week and at the gate, where the majority of sales typically occur. "We've eclipsed all of our numbers already," he said. "So we expect a really, really big week."

The timing of Scheffler's appearance places the tournament strategically within the PGA Tour calendar. After the 3M Open concludes, the Tour moves to Detroit for the Rocket Classic and North Carolina for the Wyndham Championship, before commencing the first of three consecutive FedExCup Playoff tournaments. This positioning allows Scheffler to compete in consecutive weeks while gradually building momentum toward the season's climactic events.
