Snapchat has launched a new feature called Now Playing that allows users to display their real-time music listening activity on Snap Map through a direct Spotify integration. The feature reaches Snap Map's audience of over 450 million monthly users and includes customizable privacy settings. The rollout is beginning in regions where both services operate, with Canada confirmed as a forthcoming market.

How Now Playing Works

Users can link their Spotify account to Snapchat and automatically share their current listening activity on Snap Map, where friends can view songs alongside their locations. Tapping a track offers multiple options: opening it directly in Spotify, saving it to a user's Liked Songs library, or discovering related Snapchat Spotlight videos featuring the same sound. Songs discovered in Spotlight videos can be saved to Spotify or accessed through dedicated Sound Pages without leaving Snapchat.

Privacy controls give users flexibility over visibility. Listening activity is not shared automatically with everyone who can see a user's location; four distinct visibility settings allow granular control. Additionally, sharing pauses automatically after 24 hours of inactivity and resumes only when Snapchat is reopened. Users can manually pause sharing for three hours, 24 hours, or indefinitely, ensuring personal listening habits remain private when desired.

Music Discovery and Social Expansion

The integration represents the latest industry movement toward social music sharing. Instagram enables real-time listening status through its Notes feature, while TikTok's short-form video platform frequently influences streaming charts through viral song discovery. Spotify itself has expanded social functionality with its own Listening Activity and Request to Jam features on iOS. Now Playing adds another layer to Snap Map's evolving ecosystem, which has grown from a location-sharing tool since its 2017 launch to include local hotspots, activities, and now music discovery.

Manny Adler, Snapchat's head of music, stated that music serves as one of the most personal forms of self-expression and becomes more meaningful when it strengthens friendships. The feature is designed to help users share the soundtrack to their daily lives and discover new music through existing social connections rather than algorithmic recommendations.

Is Now Playing available everywhere Snapchat operates?+
Now Playing is available in regions where both Snapchat and Spotify are offered. Canada is confirmed to receive the feature soon, and further expansion details have not yet been disclosed.
Will Now Playing work with music services other than Spotify?+
Currently, Now Playing only integrates with Spotify. However, Snapchat's announcement suggests the feature may eventually expand to include other music streaming platforms.
What happens if I stop using Snapchat for 24 hours?+
Listening activity sharing automatically pauses after 24 hours of inactivity. Sharing resumes when you open Snapchat again. You can also manually pause sharing for set periods or indefinitely.
Can I see my full listening history on Snap Map?+
No. Now Playing shows only your current song in real time. Your complete listening history and previously played tracks remain private and are not displayed on Snap Map.
How does Now Playing connect to Spotlight videos?+
When you discover a song in a Spotlight video, you can save it directly to Spotify or view the track's dedicated Sound Page. This integration connects music discovery with Snapchat's short-form video content.
