Snapchat Integrates Spotify to Let Users Share Music in Real Time on Snap Map
Snapchat's new Now Playing feature lets users share what they're listening to in real time via Snap Map by linking Spotify accounts.

Snapchat has launched a new feature called Now Playing that allows users to display their real-time music listening activity on Snap Map through a direct Spotify integration. The feature reaches Snap Map's audience of over 450 million monthly users and includes customizable privacy settings. The rollout is beginning in regions where both services operate, with Canada confirmed as a forthcoming market.
How Now Playing Works
Users can link their Spotify account to Snapchat and automatically share their current listening activity on Snap Map, where friends can view songs alongside their locations. Tapping a track offers multiple options: opening it directly in Spotify, saving it to a user's Liked Songs library, or discovering related Snapchat Spotlight videos featuring the same sound. Songs discovered in Spotlight videos can be saved to Spotify or accessed through dedicated Sound Pages without leaving Snapchat.
Privacy controls give users flexibility over visibility. Listening activity is not shared automatically with everyone who can see a user's location; four distinct visibility settings allow granular control. Additionally, sharing pauses automatically after 24 hours of inactivity and resumes only when Snapchat is reopened. Users can manually pause sharing for three hours, 24 hours, or indefinitely, ensuring personal listening habits remain private when desired.
Music Discovery and Social Expansion
The integration represents the latest industry movement toward social music sharing. Instagram enables real-time listening status through its Notes feature, while TikTok's short-form video platform frequently influences streaming charts through viral song discovery. Spotify itself has expanded social functionality with its own Listening Activity and Request to Jam features on iOS. Now Playing adds another layer to Snap Map's evolving ecosystem, which has grown from a location-sharing tool since its 2017 launch to include local hotspots, activities, and now music discovery.
Manny Adler, Snapchat's head of music, stated that music serves as one of the most personal forms of self-expression and becomes more meaningful when it strengthens friendships. The feature is designed to help users share the soundtrack to their daily lives and discover new music through existing social connections rather than algorithmic recommendations.
