Former England and Manchester City captain Steph Houghton has announced that she and her husband, Stephen Darby, are expecting their first child, due in 2026. The couple revealed the news through a social media post featuring a heart-shaped cake and ultrasound images, marking a significant milestone for the pair who have devoted themselves to motor neurone disease advocacy since his diagnosis seven years ago.

Houghton, 38, shared the announcement on Instagram with the caption "Half of You. Half of Me. Our family will soon be three! Baby Darby 2026." The announcement comes shortly after Houghton received the inaugural Northern Leaders Overall Award from BusinessCloud in January 2025, recognition honouring both her distinguished football career and her charitable contributions.

The couple's journey took a dramatic turn in 2018 when Darby, then a footballer at Bradford City, received his motor neurone disease diagnosis while Houghton was in Spain with Manchester City. The news arrived just three months into their marriage, fundamentally altering their life plans. Rather than allowing the diagnosis to derail them, the pair channelled their experience into purpose, establishing the Darby Rimmer MND Foundation to raise awareness and fund research into the progressive neurological condition.

At the Northern Leaders Awards dinner, Houghton spoke candidly about the foundation's mission. She emphasised that awareness remains central to their work, noting the global reach of their efforts across Europe and beyond. "Ultimately there's no cure for the disease, so we need as much research as possible," she told the audience. Houghton highlighted a critical gap in support, explaining that upon diagnosis, patients receive little guidance beyond the initial devastating news. The foundation exists to bridge that gap by providing assistance to affected individuals and families while accelerating research toward a cure.
