Thunder Close in on Finals Berth as Gilgeous-Alexander Powers Past Spurs in Game Five
The Oklahoma City Thunder defeated the San Antonio Spurs 127-114 in Game Five to take a 3-2 series lead in the Western Conference finals.

The Oklahoma City Thunder moved within one victory of the NBA Finals after defeating the San Antonio Spurs 127-114 in Game Five of the Western Conference finals. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 32 points despite a sluggish opening quarter, leading the Thunder to secure a 3-2 series advantage. Oklahoma City can clinch their second consecutive Finals appearance with a win in San Antonio during Game Six.
Gilgeous-Alexander's performance proved decisive despite early inefficiency. The two-time MVP opened the contest by missing his first four shots and recording three turnovers in the opening quarter. However, the Thunder star corrected course in the second and third quarters, scoring 23 points across those two periods. He finished 7-of-19 from the field but excelled at the free-throw line, converting 16 of 17 attempts.
"If it was four or five of me out there, we would've been down 20 after the first quarter," Gilgeous-Alexander reflected on his slow start. "Probably should never start like that again."
The Thunder overcame an early eight-point deficit by scoring the first nine points of the third quarter, establishing control. Supporting cast members delivered critical contributions: Alex Caruso scored 22 points after recording no points in Game Four, while Jared McCain, making his first playoff start, added 20 points with 18 coming in the second half. Oklahoma City's depth proved instrumental in weathering their star player's uneven start.
San Antonio's Victor Wembanyama finished with 20 points on 4-of-15 shooting and grabbed six rebounds. His production has declined noticeably as the series progressed—he averaged 20.5 rebounds per game in the first two contests but managed just 18 rebounds combined over the last three games. Stephon Castle led the Spurs with 24 points, while Julian Champagnie contributed 22. Spurs coach Mitch Johnson indicated Wembanyama must increase his offensive load significantly for San Antonio to extend their season. "He's going to have to take more than 15 shots even with the free throws," Johnson stated. "He's going to have more than 20 points for sure." Wembanyama declined media availability following the loss.
The Eastern Conference Finals concluded with the New York Knicks securing their first Finals berth in 27 years after sweeping the Cleveland Cavaliers 4-0, setting up a matchup with the Western Conference champion.
