Tom Kim Holds Share of Lead at Genesis Scottish Open Alongside McIlroy and Smith

Tom Kim holds a share of the lead at nine under par through two rounds of the Genesis Scottish Open at The Renaissance Club in Scotland, alongside Rory McIlroy and Jordan Smith. The tournament is serving as final preparation for elite golfers before the Open Championship at Royal Birkdale next week.
McIlroy entered the weekend positioned to compete for the title after firing opening rounds of 65 and 66. The six-time major champion attributed much of his recent success to a fundamental shift in his approach to putting, an area that previously undermined his tournament performances. McIlroy explained that inconsistent putting rounds once cost him entire competitions, but he no longer experiences those sharp declines in performance.
The Putting Transformation
Working with putting coach Brad Faxon over several years has been central to McIlroy's improvement on the greens. Beyond coaching, McIlroy credited equipment changes with providing additional confidence. He switched to a putter with more forgiving characteristics, specifically noting the Spider model as a contributing factor to his consistency. McIlroy stated that his confidence has built steadily, allowing him to simplify his routine and rely more on instinct rather than labored mechanics.
When asked if he now looks forward to putting, McIlroy confirmed a marked shift in his mindset. "I wouldn't say I wasn't looking forward to putting before I improved," he said, "but I think I'd have my good days and then I'd throw in a bad day every now and again, which really basically put me out of a tournament. I feel like I don't have those days anymore, which is a really good thing." He emphasized that eliminating poor putting rounds represents the biggest difference in his overall game.
Focus and Strategy at Renaissance Club
Despite a weather delay that pushed McIlroy's third-round tee time into the evening, he remained composed and focused on execution rather than monitoring the crowded leaderboard. His approach centered on controlling what he could influence: his own play and decision-making. McIlroy noted that the greens at The Renaissance Club suit his reading style, offering clear lines that allow him to execute with confidence.
McIlroy has now recorded 13 consecutive rounds in the 60s at this venue and is seeking his second victory in four years at the Renaissance Club. His presence near the top of the leaderboard, alongside Kim and Smith, sets up a competitive weekend push as the field prepares for the year's final major championship.
