What Happened During the Game

With 3 minutes and 16 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, Toronto center Nyara Sabally was called for a defensive foul while contesting a rebound with Reese. As Sabally fell to the floor and required medical attention during a timeout, Brondello expressed frustration with the officiating to referee Toni Patillo, stating the contested phrase about Reese.

After the final whistle, Reese addressed the comment on social media, resharing a post referencing Brondello's words and writing "ARE WE SURPRISED?!" alongside a clown emoji. The post quickly gained attention and prompted the league's swift response.

Brondello's Explanation and Apology

Brondello, who has coached Australia's national team since 2017 and won WNBA championships with Phoenix and New York, apologized on social media Saturday morning. She explained that the phrase was a common expression in Australian sports used to describe lenient referee treatment in rugby and Australian rules football, and emphasized it was directed at officiating decisions rather than Reese personally.

In statements to reporters, Brondello acknowledged the cultural context of her words: "It's a statement that's very common in Australia, it wasn't directed at Angel. I'd never do that to any kind of player. Unfortunately, I should have took a breath and realized where I am in America because I know racism is such a big issue here." She also noted that she proactively reached out to Dream General Manager Dan Padover to communicate her apology to Reese.

Reese's Response and Injury Update

Reese indicated acceptance of the apology while emphasizing the league's responsibility to maintain standards. She told reporters: "I appreciate Sandy's apology, but I also appreciate the love and support that I've had for the last 48 hours. There is no place for discrimination or hate in this league from anyone, from fans to coaches to players."

Hours after addressing the controversy, Reese suffered a knee injury during Atlanta's subsequent game against Chicago. Her knee buckled while planting for a layup early in the fourth quarter, forcing her to exit the contest. The Dream won 93-91 without her on the court.
