Tracy Shaw Endures Severe Chemotherapy Side Effects During Breast Cancer Treatment

Former Coronation Street star Tracy Shaw has revealed the harsh realities of chemotherapy treatment after being rushed to accident and emergency with severe side effects during her ongoing breast cancer battle. The 52-year-old actress, who played Maxine Peacock between 1995 and 2003, has documented her medical journey on Instagram, sharing details about complications that emerged ten days after receiving chemotherapy infusions.

Treatment Complications and Hospital Visits

Shaw disclosed that a hospital trip became necessary due to the intensity of chemotherapy's physical impact on her body. In a detailed video posted to social media, she described experiencing debilitating side effects including thrush affecting multiple areas, severe digestive issues, and complete loss of appetite. The actress revealed that her diet had been reduced to six eggs, plain crisps, and plain bread due to an inability to taste or eat normal foods. She emphasized the vulnerability she felt, comparing her weakened state to that of an infant.

The treatment protocol required significant preparation before chemotherapy could begin. Shaw explained that her diagnosis came back as HER2 positive, necessitating five months of chemotherapy rather than immediate surgery. The plan includes removal of cancerous lumps and lymph glands, followed by further testing and potentially additional surgery before radiotherapy sessions commence.

Public Support and Advocacy

Despite the physical challenges, Shaw has received substantial encouragement from her professional network and the public. Former co-star Sally Dynevor, who is herself a breast cancer survivor, publicly praised Shaw's resilience, writing that she looked "amazing." Other followers commended her strength and spirit throughout the ordeal. Beyond social media support, Shaw completed a 100-mile walk to raise funds for Breast Cancer Now, which she finished on 31 May while wearing the charity's branded merchandise. Before beginning chemotherapy, she also donated her hair to Little Princess Trust, cutting it short voluntarily rather than waiting for the treatment to cause hair loss.

Shaw has used her platform to advocate for increased National Health Service funding, calling for better government support during what she described as emotionally and physically demanding periods of treatment. She credited her neighbour and online support networks with helping her navigate critical health moments, highlighting the importance of community assistance during serious illness.
