Trump Halts Iran Strikes for Second Night to Allow Diplomatic Negotiations

President Donald Trump has suspended military operations against Iran for the second consecutive night to allow diplomatic negotiations to proceed, according to statements made on Fox News and NBC by US Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz. The pause follows nearly two weeks of daily American strikes and Iranian retaliatory attacks that effectively dismantled a ceasefire agreement struck in June.

Diplomatic Window Opens Amid Military Tensions

Ambassador Waltz indicated that the administration remains committed to dialogue while keeping escalation options available. When asked whether Trump had decided against further military action, Waltz stated the president is "giving talks some space, he's giving it a little bit of room," but cautioned that "I wouldn't go that far at all. The president is keeping all options on the table."

In a reciprocal move, an Iranian army spokesperson announced on Sunday that Tehran had halted its own "retaliatory" attacks in the region. This mutual restraint represents a significant shift after two weeks of continuous military exchanges that destabilized the broader Middle East.

The Strait of Hormuz and Escalation Triggers

The underlying dispute centres on control of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping corridor through which oil, liquefied natural gas, and other essential commodities flow globally. The initial June ceasefire included a memorandum of understanding designed to reopen the strait and facilitate a broader agreement to end hostilities within 60 days. However, after Iranian forces attacked tankers on 13 July, the United States resumed airstrikes and reinstated a naval blockade on Iranian ports.

Iranian retaliation against US military facilities and bases across the Middle East killed four American soldiers. According to Iran's health ministry, subsequent US strikes have resulted in dozens of fatalities. Meanwhile, Iran and Oman held technical talks in Tehran on Friday and Saturday to discuss strait management, suggesting parallel diplomatic channels remain active.

Military Capability Questions and Political Context

Waltz rejected reports from the New York Times suggesting that administration officials had warned about depleting air defence munitions stockpiles. "The US military has everything that it needs to conduct this campaign as effectively as it needs to be," he stated, dismissing concerns about resource constraints.

President Trump has not yet made a public statement on the latest developments, though he previously posted computer-generated imagery on his Truth Social account depicting US military aircraft bombing Iranian ships and Kharg Island. In the United Kingdom, newly appointed Defence Secretary Wes Streeting announced plans to meet with US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth in the coming week to discuss the Strait of Hormuz and its implications for global commerce.
