The suspension occurs as Vice President JD Vance attempts to maintain dialogue and build on a recently signed memorandum designed to ease tensions over the Strait of Hormuz.

What Triggered the Walkout

Iranian negotiators suspended talks at a mountain resort near Burgenstock following a stream of aggressive statements from Trump across social media and television interviews. The Iranian chief negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, publicly criticised the threats, questioning their strategic value given the administration's stated desire for negotiations. Iran's delegation cited concerns about personal safety and breach of the non-aggression provisions included in the memorandum signed by Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian the previous week.

The walkout was partly motivated by domestic political pressure on Iran's negotiating team to demonstrate skepticism toward American intentions. However, before departing the talks, negotiators secured a draft agreement regarding the issuance of sanctions waivers for Iranian oil exports and progress on unfreezing Iranian assets held in overseas accounts. Trump's aggressive rhetoric contrasts sharply with the diplomatic approach adopted by Vice President Vance, who stated he had been tasked with opening a new chapter in US-Iran relations. In a Fox News interview, Trump vowed to resume bombing operations and "take over" the Strait of Hormuz if negotiations fail to produce a satisfactory agreement. This inconsistency in messaging has complicated efforts to sustain the diplomatic process initiated by the memorandum of understanding.

Regional Complications

Iran has reasserted its blockade of the Strait of Hormuz in response to continued Israeli military operations in Lebanon, which have killed more than 30 people in recent strikes. Iran contends that Israel is violating the memorandum by breaching the ceasefire on all fronts. Trump dismissed Iran's concerns, stating on social media that "Iran must immediately stop their highly paid proxies in Lebanon from causing trouble," referring to Hezbollah.
