UCLA's Championship Quest

The Bruins arrived at regionals as heavy favorites with junior shortstop Roch Cholowsky leading the roster. Cholowsky finished the regular season as the top prospect for July's MLB Draft while helping UCLA win every weekend series during conference play. The team also captured the Big Ten tournament title, cementing their position as the tournament's most complete program heading into postseason competition.

UCLA made the Omaha finals last year with a largely underclassman lineup, and this season's roster features those returning players plus transfer portal additions. The program seeks its second national championship and first since 2013. However, the path remains challenging. The Bruins will face fourth-seeded Saint Mary's in their opening regional matchup. Saint Mary's boasts a team batting average of .333, ranking third nationally. Virginia Tech and Cal Poly complete UCLA's regional bracket, and either West Virginia, Wake Forest, or Kentucky could emerge from the Morgantown regional to meet the Bruins in a potential super-regional matchup.

Tournament Format and Broader Storylines

Regional play consists of four-team double-elimination brackets where winners advance to super-regional best-of-three series next weekend. The eight super-regional victors will qualify for Omaha.
