UCSB Chemical Engineering PhD Student Vikram Mubayi Found Dead in Sierra Nevada Mountains

Vikram Mubayi, a doctoral candidate in chemical engineering at UC Santa Barbara, was found dead on August 3 in Inyo National Forest following a solo hiking expedition in the Eastern Sierra mountains. The Hong Kong-born researcher had last communicated with family members on August 1 at 8:37 p.m. while in the Big Pine Lakes area. California Highway Patrol recovered his body after Inyo County Search and Rescue initiated a search operation.

Academic Background and Research Focus

Mubayi earned his Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 2022 before pursuing doctoral studies at UC Santa Barbara's Robert Mehrabian College of Engineering. His research centered on sustainable environmental solutions, specifically investigating bacterial and biological methods for decomposing plant waste and plastics. This work aimed to develop alternatives to petroleum-based materials as part of broader efforts to address climate change.

Beyond his research contributions, Mubayi served as a teaching assistant for both undergraduate and graduate chemical engineering courses at UCSB. He was also involved with Illini 4000, a student-led nonprofit organization. According to his professional biography, he harbored a passion for outdoor activities and sports alongside his academic pursuits.

His sibling, who reported the incident on social media, described him as a "fairly experienced hiker," suggesting his outdoor experience did not prevent the tragedy.
