UK 35C Temperature Forecast Peaks as Fourth Heatwave Brings Amber Health Alerts Across Southern England

Parts of southern and eastern England face peak temperatures reaching 35 degrees Celsius on Wednesday as the fourth widespread UK heatwave of the year arrives, with the UK Health Security Agency issuing amber heat health alerts covering major population centers including London and the South-East. The Environment Agency simultaneously declared an official drought affecting more than half of England, driven by relentless heat and significant rainfall deficits throughout the summer.

The Heat Surge and Affected Regions

A plume of intense heat advancing northward from North Africa, already intensifying temperatures across Iberia and France, will reach UK shores on Wednesday. Temperatures in southern and eastern England and parts of the Midlands are forecast to climb sharply, with readings between 30-35 degrees Celsius at their peak. Some eastern areas of Wales may also approach heatwave classification thresholds.

The amber heat health alerts apply to the East Midlands, East of England, London, and the South-East from 09:00 BST on 29 July through 09:00 BST on 30 July. Yellow alerts, indicating less severe conditions, extend to the South-West, West Midlands, and Yorkshire and the Humber during the same period. Northern England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland will experience milder conditions, with temperatures in northern regions reaching only 18-20 degrees Celsius.

Health Warnings and Drought Declaration

The UK Health Security Agency warns that significant impacts will affect health and social care services during the peak, including increased mortality among those aged 65 and older or with existing health conditions. An additional concern flagged by officials involves a potential rise in drowning incidents. The concurrent drought declaration reflects the combination of exceptional temperatures and severe precipitation shortages, with implications for agriculture and water availability across affected areas.

Rapid Cooling Expected

Despite the intensity, this heatwave is forecast to be notably brief. A weather front moving through on Thursday will usher fresher air into the region, with temperatures falling by approximately 5-8 degrees Celsius compared to Wednesday's peak. Humidity levels will also ease significantly, improving conditions for sleep and general comfort. By Friday, temperatures across most of the UK are expected to return close to seasonal averages, with some northern Scottish regions falling slightly below normal. Saturday will bring a chilly start but predominantly dry weather with sunny spells, with temperatures settling in the low to mid-20s Celsius.

July itself has proven exceptionally warm, running approximately 3 degrees Celsius above the UK average according to provisional meteorological data, potentially ranking among the three or four hottest Julys on record. Three heatwaves have already been recorded since May, reflecting a pattern of extreme weather intensification across the region.
