Unruly aircraft passenger bites fellow traveler on American Airlines flight to Philadelphia

An unruly passenger bit a fellow traveler on an American Airlines flight as it descended toward Philadelphia on Sunday, prompting the pilot to request emergency medical and law enforcement personnel upon landing. The incident represents one of several violent passenger incidents reported on U.S. commercial flights in recent weeks.

The flight, departing from Charlotte, North Carolina earlier that morning, landed at Philadelphia International Airport just before 10 a.m. ET. During the approach, the pilot reported to air traffic control that the passenger was "trying to fight everybody" on board, adding uncertainty about whether the individual was hallucinating. American Airlines stated the passenger was experiencing a medical emergency, and a medical professional aboard provided assistance prior to landing. The airline did not disclose whether police took the passenger into custody upon arrival.

The incident reflects a troubling pattern of onboard violence. In separate occurrences over the preceding weeks, a Frontier Airlines flight from San Juan, Puerto Rico was diverted to Miami after a passenger attempted to open an exit door mid-flight—an attempt interrupted by a former professional MMA fighter also on board. A United Airlines flight from Newark bound for Guatemala City made an emergency landing in Washington, D.C. after another passenger allegedly tried opening a door at 36,000 feet. Additionally, a United flight traveling from Chicago to Minneapolis-St. Paul was diverted to Madison, Wisconsin following a 75-year-old passenger's mental health crisis that created a security concern, prompting an FBI investigation.

The exchange between the pilot and air traffic controller ended with both laughing. When the controller wished the pilot a happy Father's Day, the pilot responded: "I'll be sure to tell my daughters about this one."
