Valter Walker Demands Higher Pay Before Fighting Ranked Heavyweights in UFC

Valter Walker is using his upcoming bout against Thomas Petersen on July 25 in Abu Dhabi as leverage to secure a higher-paying UFC contract, refusing to face ranked opponents while earning what he describes as insufficient compensation. The heavyweight prospect has completed four consecutive first-round victories via heel hook submission, but made clear his financial terms before taking on elevated competition.

The Financial Stand

Walker stated that his unwillingness to face top-ranked heavyweights stems not from fear but from economics. He emphasized that competing against high-level opponents carries significant risk—particularly the possibility of knockout losses—and that such risk requires appropriate financial compensation. In his current contract structure, the monetary reward does not justify fighting opponents with legitimate chances to defeat him. However, Walker indicated he accepts fighting lower-ranked fighters for modest pay, since the financial downside of a loss is less consequential.

The Moscow-based fighter revealed that his financial situation depends heavily on the outcome of the Petersen fight. He has already allocated funds from this bout to opening a gym in his home city. A victory would provide him approximately six months of financial runway while allowing him to establish the gym. Conversely, a loss would force him to redirect all fight earnings toward the gym opening, leaving him without financial cushion to pursue other opportunities.

Beginning with Junior Tafa, he has submitted Don'Tale Mayes, Kennedy Nzechukwu, and Louie Sutherland—all within the first round using heel hook submissions. Walker expressed confidence in extending this submission streak, drawing inspiration from Rousey's eight consecutive armbar victories that preceded her championship ascent. Walker has volunteered to face either Josh Hokit or Gable Steverson next, following his scheduled encounter with Petersen.
