West Midlands Safari Park Remembers Strider, its Oldest Giraffe, After 23 Years

West Midlands Safari Park in Bewdley, Worcestershire, has announced the death of Strider, a 23-year-old giraffe who was the oldest member of the park's herd. Born at the facility in 2002, Strider was euthanised following a decline in his quality of life, with park officials prioritising his welfare in the decision. The passing has prompted tributes from keepers and colleagues who worked alongside the animal for over two decades.

A Distinctive Presence

Strider was recognised throughout his life at the park for distinctive characteristics that made him memorable to visitors and staff. Described as possessing a laid-back personality and dopey expressions, he was also noted for an unmistakable slobbery smile. The park's statement reflected on his ability to connect with those around him, stating that whether guests encountered him during the Safari Drive experience or keepers worked alongside him daily, he left a lasting impression across generations of park visitors.

Role Within the Herd

Beyond his appeal to the public, Strider held a significant role within the giraffe family at West Midlands Safari Park. Members of the Ungulate team described him as a calm and reassuring presence whose influence extended to younger giraffes born at the facility. He frequently functioned as what staff termed a "wonderful uncle," offering companionship and comfort to calves as they developed, and his mentorship helped shape the close-knit herd structure that exists today.

The park's Ungulate team, many of whom worked closely with Strider, created a tribute video reflecting on their memories and experiences with him. Officials emphasised that his loss is deeply felt by everyone involved in his care throughout the decades.
