Xbox has launched backward compatibility on PC, enabling players to access classic original Xbox games on computers and handheld devices.

Xbox has introduced backward compatibility on PC, allowing players to access classic original Xbox games across computers and handheld devices including the ROG Ally and Ally X. The early release launches with four original Xbox titles available for purchase or through Xbox Game Pass membership. This initiative represents a broader commitment to preserving gaming legacy and enabling players to carry their libraries forward across evolving technology platforms.

Expanded Platform Access
The backward compatibility feature extends beyond traditional console play. Players who own digital licenses for these classic titles on Xbox console can now access them on PC and supported handhelds through the power of Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming. This means a single purchase provides access across console, cloud, PC, and handheld ecosystems without requiring repurchase.
The four games launching in the initial preview are now available for purchase individually on PC or included with any Xbox Game Pass plan tier. Supported handheld devices include the ROG Ally lineup, expanding options for portable gaming beyond traditional mobile platforms.
Enhanced Technical Features
Rather than simple emulation, these classic games include modern enhancements designed specifically for PC performance. Players can customize graphics settings featuring up to 4x resolution upscaling, VSync support, fullscreen and windowed display modes, anisotropic filtering, and enhanced anti-aliasing options. Language and audio settings are also customizable to accommodate international players.
Additional features remain under development. Xbox has confirmed that Achievements—one of the most frequently requested features by players—will arrive later this year for select original Xbox games on both console and PC platforms. These enhancements will roll out to the four launch titles within the coming months.
System Requirements and Availability
Backward compatible titles are accessible through the Xbox app on PC, provided systems meet minimum specifications. Regional availability restrictions apply during the early release phase. This launch represents the starting point of what Xbox describes as an ongoing effort to bring additional classic games to PC over time, with a specific roadmap for future additions not yet disclosed.
